PAMPLONA, Negros Oriental -- Community volunteers and local chief executives of Barangay Simborio here participated in a bamboo planting activity along the banks of Inolocan River to mark the start of the construction of a 100-linear-meter cable footbridge.

Bamboos are known to help prevent soil erosion when planted along river banks and riparian zones, hence, planting bamboo trees would help preserve the cable footbridge constructed in the area.

The cable footbridge worth P4,003,733 was one of the prioritized community projects during the second cycle Municipal Inter-Barangay Forum (MIBF) of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan–Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDDS), a Community-Driven Development (CDD) program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

There are three cycles in every Kalahi-CIDSS project implementation, and community projects proposed by the communities of each town are deliberated and prioritized during the MIBF.

The MIBF fosters community participation and project transparency, wherein ordinary community folks coming from different barangays get to decide and plan how the development plans will be implemented, making service delivery and local governance more responsive.

Part of the activity was a brief orientation on the Thematic Environment Management System (TEMS) to build up community resiliency toward mitigating the effects of climate change and contributing to biodiversity protection.

Officials and department heads of the municipal local government unit also supported the activity by providing the bamboo seedlings and planting materials.

The construction of the cable footbridge is expected to be completed in June in time of the monsoon rains when flash floods frequently happen in the area. (PR)
