SILLIMAN University’s College of Mass Communication, which started as the first Philippine school of journalism outside Metro Manila in 1966, is set to give Golden Jubilee Awards to successful alumni in its 50-year history.
Silliman MassCom Alumni Association president Tony Remollo said the awards will honor achievers among its more than a thousand alumni in various fields of journalism, mass media and social media on August 25 during the Silliman Founders' Day celebrations.
The Silliman College of Mass Communication and the MassCom Alumni Association are now calling for nominees for the awards.
Anyone can nominate an alumnus and submit the nomination accompanied by two endorsements and the alumni Curriculum Vitae with 2x2 photo to the MassCom Golden Jubilee Awards Committee, College of Mass Communication, Silliman, Dumaguete City.
Former journalism educator professor of Silliman University (SU) and University of the Philippines (UP) Dr. Crispin Maslog said an independent Board of Judges composed of mass media professionals and communication educators will evaluate the nominations and choose the winners.
Deadline for submission of nominations is on July 15.
The nominations will be accepted for any one of the four categories:
1. Achievements in their chosen professional fields -- print media, broadcast media, advertising-public relations-social marketing, and social media.
2. Achievements in related communication fields in academe, like communication research, communication education and administration.
3. Achievements in related communication fields like media enterprise, entrepreneurship and institution building.
4. Achievements in non-mass media but communication-related fields like government service, management and administration in academic institutions, corporate communications and non-government organizations (NGOs).
Candidates must be alumni of the School/College of Mass Communication from 1966 to 2006.
The rationale is that it takes 10 years or more for a graduate to be able to establish himself and make an impact in his profession.
Candidates must also be nominated to the Silliman Alumni Awards Committee and give consent to the nomination, while nominations must be accompanied by two endorsements.
Main criteria are success and achievements in the graduate’s chosen professional field.
As in the Outstanding Sillimanian Awards, the criteria will also consider the life of the nominee as a reflection of the “Via, Veritas, Vita.”
Professional success is defined as accomplishment of the goals in one’s profession -- among others, a body of reportorial, written or editing works, positions held in the industry, enterprises founded, institutions built, innovations made, community service extended, awards received.
Impact of the professional accomplishment on society as far as can be determined indicated by sustained commitment and years of experience in the chosen field.
The nominee’s leadership role in his chosen profession -- whether in the media industry, communication education, corporate communication, or community service -- will also be considered, as well as evidence of quality in the work he does as a media practitioner, educator or worker in related fields.
