GRILLED shrimps in buko salsa of municipality of Sibulan was declared first prize winner of the 20 menus contesting in the 3rd grand cook fest “Lutong Garbo” of Negros Oriental.
The fest was held last October, 18, 2008 at the Provincial Agriculture Social Hall.

The Piyanggan Manok with gabi spiced grilled chicken of Dumaguete City got second place and the “TABUSI” (tabugok, butong with sili) of Jimalalud got the third place.
Angelita Licerio, cook of the grilled shrimps received P10,000; Rogelia Alderete of Piyanggan Manok got P7,000 and Lorwin Serillo of Tabushing got P5,000.
All winners also received gift packs and trophies from the Negros Oriental Tourism Council.
Ms. Sylvia Uy, Vice-Chair of the Provincial Tourism Council said winners may start their own food business.
The winners, she said, may join next year’s competition.
Sibulan’s menu was made from 1 kilo shrimps mixed with grated buko and spices. The shrimps were then wrapped and tied in banana leaf, steamed with lemon grass and buko juice until shrimps were cooked.
Piyanggan manok with gabi spiced grilled chicken was a mixture of homemade spice and chicken with lemon grass stalks. Chicken pieces were soaked with thick coconut milk, and boiled until tender. It was then roasted until the chicken was until partially brown. The chicken dish was a beautifully blended and an exotic savory dish.
While Jimalalud’s TABUSI, small octopus (tabugok) was sautéed with garlic and onions until golden brown. Uyap, coconut and sili (pepper) were added and was garnished red bell pepper. (EBS)
