THE LEGISLATIVE arm of Tuba urged the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) not to issue a certificate of compliance and provisional authority to the city government of Baguio for the operations of the Asin hydroelectric power plants because of several unresolved issues.

The council submitted Resolution 48, series of 2013 to the Provincial Board of Benguet which expresses its plea to ERC.

THE first question I asked the first tricycle driver I saw after my five hour bus ride from Baguio City to Pinili, Ilocos Norte was “Manong, where can we find Barangay Pugaoan?”

He was quite hesitant to answer me with a facial expression of confusion while checking us out in our outfits (backpack, sunglasses, shorts and rubber shoes). WITH the active and smart leadership of Governor Imee Marcos Ilocos Norte’s tourism is booming with of course the dedication of the government officials.

The Ilocos Norte Provincial Tourism Office (INPTO) said since the launch of the province’s tourism brand Paoay Kumakaway (Paoay beckons) in 2011, tourist arrival rate has been steadily increasing from average 0f 200,000 annual tourist arrivals to more than 600,000.

The tourism increase required the provincial government to develop and improve tourist spots and establish tourist centers in key tourist spots in the province.

CORDILLERA Goshenland Football Club (CGFC) pulls off separate victories in the six and eight under division to rule their respective age class in the second Goshen Land Summer Cup at the Brent Baguio football field recently.

THE “folkhouse.” Any book written about the Baguio I grew up in would be remiss without a piece about this bastion of 70s Baguio culture, which – quite frankly – is not even a proper word, i.e., found in a decent dictionary of the English language.

The folkhouse was what in normal parlance is called a bar. This Baguio once-mainstay was a bar featuring what we called “folk music.” By folk music, we actually meant what is now identified as “folk-rock” or even country music, the imported kind, straight from the U.S. of A.

I HAD the privilege to speak before close to a hundred kindergarten public school teachers of Baguio-Car Region on May 24, during the culmination of their Continuing Education program.

Earlier when invited, Ma’am Susan, my coordinator in MDC Life Seminars, asked their coordinator what they would want me to speak about, and she was simply told, “inspire them”. That is a tall order for any speaker. Most of the time, being given a topic makes the preparation easier. Why? It limits the topic to research on and ponder upon.

AS A young boy I would recall my mum taking us to Session Theatre for us to watch Julie Andrews.

In this movie she plays the role as yaya to the Von Trapp kids - seven children to a military officer.

As a movie there must have been many a script to this, except what made this movie famous is that it was a musical. THE Department of Health’s Regional Epidemiological and Surveillance Unit (Resu) reported that measles cases in the Cordillera Administrative Region increased by 157 percent.

Suspected measles cases rose to 77 this year compared to 30 cases reported from January 1 to May 18 last year.

ACCORDING to a report posted by the Philippine National Aids Council, the hunt for an HIV vaccine has eaten up at least $8 billion in the last ten years.

The report added that failure of the most recent efficacy trial has delivered yet another setback to 26 years of efforts based on a research at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative laboratory works on samples in New York.
