THE Department of Tourism (DOT) in Davao is still wooing tourists or "bakasyonistas" on their last-minute summer holidays.

"May panahon pa naman (there is still time)," said Art Boncato, DOT-Davaodirector, as he urged people to visit varied tourism destinations in the region as the month of May comes to an end. "Meron pa tayong two weeks bago mag-opening ang classes in June (We still have two-weeks before classes opens in June).”

Government strictly monitors trading of daratex fiber

THE government is strictly monitoring the production, trading and shipment of daratex fiber, an abaca look-alike known as musa specie, to address concerns about false labeling.

Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA) Administrator Cecilia Gloria Soriano said Permit to Transport Fiber (PTF) is issued to traders to ensure that fibers transported from one province to another are properly classified as to the kind of fiber, and the province where the fiber was produced.

Davao reaches 43% of investment goal in 1st quarter

THE Davao Region registered P3.6 billion worth of investments in the first quarter of 2012.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Davao Director Marizon Loreto said the investments accounted for about 43 percent of the 2012 investment target of P8.4 billion.

If the amount of investments were sustained in the next three quarters, it could surpass the 2011 investment figure for the Davao Region that registered P10.9 billion.

QUARANTINE officials of the People's Republic of China (PROC) have allowed Philippine bananas to enter their market after imposing stricter measures on the product coming from the Philippines.

"I can tell you that we have a bit of good news. We have progressed in resolving the phytosanitary issue. We received word today that 30 to 40 containers have been allowed to pass in China. So that's a little bit of good news for us," Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte announced in Malacanang on Tuesday.

A BRAND new 3-classroom school building is rising soon in the campus of Sto. Tomas Elementary School in Sto. Tomas town of Davao del Norte.

This is courtesy of Aboitiz-owned electric utility Davao Light and Power Company in coordination with its social development arm, Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., and with support from the local municipal government.

The partnership was formalized last May 17, 2012 with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that will govern the school building construction project.

AS PART of its continuing expansion this year, Airphil Express, the fastest growing budget carrier in the country today, has added two new regional routes that would take its passengers from Clark to Singapore (and vice versa) and Clark to Hong Kong (and vice versa).

The maiden flight of Clark to Singapore route was launched last May 17, while the Clark to Hong Kong route was opened the following day, May 18.

Mountain Haven to open recreation center

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Davao Region will convene local banana industry stakeholders in the region today, Friday, to discuss the industry's present situation.

DTI Regional Director Marizon Loreto said the region being the country's top banana exporter must always be proactive in dealing with issues related to the attainment of the industry's full economic potential.

The conference is set at 2 p.m. at the DTI office along Monteverde Avenue.

THE planned June sales mission to Beijing, China spearheaded by the Department of Tourism Region (DOT) has been cancelled as tensions between the two countries over disputed areas in the West Philippines Sea spills over to tourism.

Eden Larano, chief tourism operations officer of DOT-Davao, said they had been advised by the tourism attaché in Beijing that the schedule of the sales mission is "too close for comfort."

The Davao Cultural Festival in the Chinese capital was supposed to be held from June 11 to June 30.

THE Nationwide Development Corporation (Nadecor), as party to a Mineral Production Sharing Agreement with the Philippine Government for the King-king Copper-Gold Project (King-king) in Pantukan, Compostela Valley Province, recently submitted its Declaration of Mine Project Feasibility (DMPF) to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB).

The submission was announced by Nadecor director Conrado T. Calalang, who is past chairman and leads an investor group that controls over 50 percent of the company.
