Editorial: Political contortionism

IN FIELD of human kinetics, boxing champ Manny Pacquiao is regarded as "near-omniscient," one guy who attempts to explore beyond the limits of human physical power. In fact, many even believe, and Ricky Hatton could be one of them, that Pacquiao's physical strength has already intruded into the domain of the "divine".

Although, some pragmatist among them posit that Manny Pacquiao has an amulet (anting-anting) which, by its spell, made him transform into a monster in the ring.

We, too, bow down to Manny Pacquiao's physical "divinity," through which he had been able to build an awesome financial empire for himself and his family. But, despite his "divine-laden" attributes, Pacquiao has its share of monumental blunders:

First, when he entered in the political arena with Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio in 2007; and, second, when he lately decided to challenge the hold to political power in Sarangani by the reinforced and reinvigorated Chiongbian-Dominguez political alliance.

We need not anymore recount how, in 2007, Manny fell flat on his face in the political canvass after Darlene sweetly unleashed her devastating political blow to where he was hurt most.

During that time, we heard accounts of how Manny's electoral leaders ran away with their bulky pockets as the trend for his defeat looms in the electoral horizon.

Considering the current balance of social forces in Sarangani, the same fate will surely befall Manny Pacquiao in 2010, if he would fail to see things through the lens of reality.

The way for Pacquiao's electoral victory can only be paved if the political alliance between the Chiongbians and the Dominguezes disintegrates, and Pacquiao would be smart enough in seizing the moments offered by such political collapse by joining any of them.

By doing this, Manny could be benefited by tested and trusted electoral infrastructure built like efficiently embroidered and strongly jointed cobwebs covering the entire province, up to its remotest communities. Again by doing so, Manny could comfortably take refuge on cohesive electoral machinery, which moves in perfect rhythm with its command center.

However, instead of collapsing, the Chiongbian-Dominguez alliance became more invincible now, and is still engaged in active accumulation of electoral forces.

Today, what Manny Pacquaio has are ragtag forces of political gangs, unified only by their uncompromising love for the cockpits.

They are also the same people, we suspect, who would want Manny to perform acts of contortionism which could break not his body, but his soul. After all, there is nothing more soul-breaking than seeing "your people" laughing away with your money.
