Coliform content in Iloilo River drops

THE coliform level in the Iloilo River has dropped significantly, monitoring by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) shows.

The decrease, Raul Lorilla of EMB told the monthly meeting of the Iloilo-Batiano River Development Council on Friday, reflects the growing awareness of Iloilo City residents and business establishments along the Iloilo River to preserve the waterway.

Boost for Iloilo River’s recreational fishermen

A TOTAL of 7,000 fish fingerlings were released into the Iloilo River on Friday to boost recreational fishing along the waterway.

The 5,000 tilapia and 2,000 milkfish bangus fingerlings were released from the Carpenter's Bridge in ceremonies headed by Senate President Franklin and Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

Iloilo center finished by end of this July

THE structure for the P700-million Iloilo Convention Center (ICC) is finished, leaving only the installation of the building's electrical and mechanical features.

THE first Ilongga honorary consul of Spain for Western Visayas was installed March 5 in Iloilo City during a ceremony attended by Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines, Luis Calvo Castano.

Ma. Rosa Cacho, who is of Spanish descent and whose family set up the Panay Electric Company, will become the fourth honorary consul of Spain after Cebu, Bicol and Zamboanga.

Council approves report on terminal market anomalies

THE ILOILO City council has recommended charges against eight city officials and employees implicated in anomalies at the Iloilo terminal market.

In a 44-page committee report, the council on Tuesday recommended that charges be brought before the Ombudsman Visayas against City Administrator Norlito Bautista, accountable officer Marcela Ymalay of the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO), LEEO Market Supervisors Wenona Jaudian and Enrique Billena; employee Fedelyn Villalobos, market in-charge Ely Sumaray, local revenue officer Zenia de la Cruz, and former LEEO Vincent de la Cruz.

Council blasts port project

THE Iloilo City Council's Committee on Engineering, Construction and Public Works wants the Philippine Ports Authority to stop the construction of a water tank at the city's roro port terminal, saying it has no building permit from the City Engineer's Office.

In a report read by Councilor Rodel Fullon Agado, the committee also said the project's contractor, Opell Construction, violated labor laws and tolerated poor working conditions. (LCP)

Apec committee assures Iloilo hosting even without ICC

THE Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec)-National Organizing Committee had assured the hosting of Iloilo City of two Apec ministerial meetings in September and October this year even if construction of the main venue Iloilo Convention Center (ICC) is not finished on time.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said that NOC head Ambassador Marciano Paynor and his staff were in the city early this week to see and evaluate other possible venues for the meetings, and were impressed with what they saw even with or without the ICC.

Iloilo is elephantiasis-free

Lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, is a painful and profoundly disfiguring disease causing temporary or permanent disability, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
