Study: Students frequent lodging houses for sex

A SURVEY conducted by Mass Communication students of the West Visayas State University among 100 taxi drivers in Iloilo City showed a high incidence of premarital sex among college and high school students, and even among elementary pupils.

A report on "Survival Sex in Iloilo City" by Professor Ma. Rosario Victoria de Guzman during a City Council committee hearing also showed the rampant survival sex for pay, especially during midterm and finals seasons.

Mabilog said he sees no problem with the concept because in Negros Occidental are also called Ilonggos and there is brisk trade between Iloilo and Bacolod and the rest of the Panay provinces.

15 outstanding student leaders to be recognized

THE Iloilo City Government will recognize 15 outstanding and graduating high school student leaders in a ceremony on March 26 at SM City Iloilo.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the “Ang Batang Lider” recognition is the only official award given by the City Government to outstanding student leaders of Iloilo City who are graduating from high school in city-based colleges and universities, private schools and public schools.

2 establishments ordered closed

ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has ordered the immediate closure of two business establishments for having no business permit.

Mabilog said the Basil Talabahan along the diversion road, although sitting on a private lot, has not applied for a business permit and locational clearance to legitimize its operation.

Mayor orders close review of housing beneficiaries

MAYOR Jed Patrick Mabilog has ordered the Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office to closely review and validate beneficiaries and informal settlers who availed themselves of the city’s housing units at the relocation sites.

Allegations on favoritism and misrepresentation erupted last week in the awarding of housing units at the River Plains Subdivision Phase 1 in Lanit, Jaro to not qualified beneficiaries but related to village chief Rammy Guintibano of Barangay Camalig, Jaro.

Army: Soldiers in Iloilo villages on civic mission

Tourist wave continues in Western Visayas

Housing for police in Bacolod

USAid provides P63M in post-Yolanda education support

THE United States Agency for International Development (USAid) provided an additional P63 million and school equipment for 19 disaster-stricken 19 municipalities in Iloilo, Capiz and Bohol.

A statement from the US Embassy in Manila said USAid Mission Director Gloria D. Steele witnessed the signing of an agreement last March 9 between the municipal mayors, school principals and Synergeia Foundation, USAid's implementing partner for the Education Governance Effectiveness (EdGE) Project, which will help elementary public schools recover from the calamities.

ICC target soft opening on June 12

SENATE President Franklin Drilon has ordered to fast-track the construction of the Iloilo Convention Center (ICC) in time for the target soft opening slated on June 12 in celebration of the Philippine Independence Day.

Drilon said President Benigno Aquino III will lead the flag-raising ceremony at Sta. Barbara, Iloilo on June 12, the first time for the Independence Day celebration to be held outside Manila.

Anti-noise measure pushed

Council acts to curb illegal ‘extra service’

Home deliveries a big no in Iloilo City

ALL pregnant women are prohibited from delivering their babies at home and are mandated to deliver at health facilities, public and private birthing clinics and hospitals.

Councilor Liezl Joy Zulueta-Salazar, chairperson of the City Council committee on women and family relations, said the City Council approved an ordinance mandating pregnant women to deliver at the birthing clinic or health facility, prohibiting home deliveries, restricting the practice of traditional birth attendants such as hilot or paltera skilled birth attendants, and strictly imposing newborn screening (NBS) in all newborns by providing fees and penalties for violations thereof.

City to provide police vehicles for Apec meet

Demolition of river resto set

THE Iloilo City's Task Force Against Squatting and Illegal Structures will demolish on March 20 the river restaurant owned by a village chief in Barangay Rizal, Lapuz.

The Iloilo-Batiano River Development Council recommended the demolition of the illegal restaurant, owned by Rizal barangay captain Jolly Penasales and located at the mangrove swamp along the Iloilo River, saying it restricts the flow of the river and add to heavy river siltation.

Drilon eyes higher fines vs crimes

SENATE President Franklin Drilon is seeking major changes in the 85-year-old Revised Penal Code by adjusting the amounts of imposable fines in determining the criminal liability for various crimes committed.

Drilon, who was in Iloilo over the weekend, said his Senate Bill 2680 seeks to amend the law that was enacted in 1930, as the penalties and fines are no longer commensurate to the crimes committed.

Iloilo taxi operators slam rate cut

TAXI operators in Iloilo City have joined the move of the Metro Manila-based Philippine National Operators Association in filing a motion for reconsideration to stop the implementation of the P10 cut in flag-down rate.

Ordinance to enhance mobility of PWDs approved

City to bring art to the streets
