THE city agriculturist office has completed the listing of 57 fishpen operators who will be beneficiaries of livelihood assistance by the Iloilo City Government.

Officer-in-charge Geraldine Hautea said the operators are mostly owners of “tangab and punot” erected along the Batiano River from the river mouth at Baluarte to the river boundary in Oton, Iloilo.

Hautea said these operators were already informed to vacate and voluntary demolish their fishpens and are only waiting for the financial livelihood assistance the city will give to them.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon are pushing for the river clean-up and preservation, as Batiano River was found to be dying from illegal intrusion aside from fishpens.

The illegal intrusions at the 11-kilometer river include more than 200 informal settler families living along the riverbank, mangrove and nipa clusters in the middle of the river, an islet growing in the middle of the river and illegal fishpond dikes that impede the river flow.

Hautea said livelihood assistance beneficiaries include 27 individuals in six riverbank barangays in Molo district, and 30 in six barangays in Arevalo district.

The beneficiaries in Molo district are Rogelio Deala, Cornelio Ebro and Morito Ebro Sr. in Barangay Boulevard; Eduardo Villanueva, David Panganiban, Reynold Balontong, Hector Tignero, Jose Dedil, Pastor Granzo, Hernanie Ablao and Faustina Balontong in Barangay Calumpang; Francisco Parnaso, Angelo Macabotas and Rolly Talamor in Barangay Compania; Raymundo Mallon and Joel Alog in Barangay San Juan; Ramir Nava and Edmundo Catalan in Barangay South Baluarte; and Joselito Guanzon and Avelino Buhayan in Barangay West Habog-habog.
