NINETEEN out of 21 members of the House of Representatives representing the Western Visayas and Negros Oriental block signed recently a resolution calling for the National Government to prioritize the construction of bridges that will link the islands of Panay, Guimaras and Negros.
Initiated by Iloilo City Representative Jerry P. Treñas, the resolution calls for the construction of trans-link bridges and spur up more economic development in the three Visayan islands for a project estimated to cost P53 billion.
Based on the Department of Public Works and Highways (DWPH) study, a bridge will be constructed to connect Leganes town in Iloilo to Buenavista town in Guimaras. Another bridge will link San Lorenzo town in Guimaras to Pulupandan town in Negros Occidental.
The proposed bridge, spanning some 23 kilometers, could be implemented through funds from the public-private partnership flagship program of President Benigno Aquino III.
Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the project is expected to enhance the growth of the islands, especially Panay and Iloilo City and province as trans-link bridges will boost tourism activities and reduce transportation and business transaction costs.
Mabilog reiterated his full support to the project and hoped the project will have a head start before the term of Aquino ends in 2016.
Aside from Treñas, those who signed the resolution are Iloilo Representatives Janette Garin, Augusto Syjuco, Arthur Defensor Jr., Ferjenel Biron, and Niel Tupas Jr.
Other Panay lawmakers who signed the resolution are Florencio Miraflores of Aklan, Paolo Javier of Antique, Antonio Del Rosario of Roxas City, Capiz, and Jane Castro of Capiz, JC Rahman Nava of Guimaras, Anthony Rolando Golez Jr. of Bacolod City, Alfredo Marañon III, Alfredo Benitez,, Jeffrey Ferrer, and Mercedes Alvarez of Negros Occidental.
Negros Oriental lawmakers who signed the resolution are Jocelyn Limkaichong, George Arnaiz, and Pryde Henry Teves.
