Lawmaker asks promotion of 7 city tourism sites-A A +A
Monday, June 25, 2012
REPRESENTATIVE Jerry Treñas asked Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Councilor Nielex Tupas, chairman of the City Council committee on tourism, to use the seven tourism sites and tour packages by the city tourism office and private partners in order to boost tourism in Iloilo.
Treñas recently filed House Bill 5495 or “An Act declaring the Jaro Cathedral, Molo Church, Iloilo City Central Business District, Fort San Pedro, Jaro Plaza Complex, Molo Plaza Complex, and the Plaza Libertad Complex as heritage and tourist spots in the city.”
In a site assessment report prepared by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zoning Authority (Tieza) supporting the Treñas House Bill, both government agencies recommended the enhancement and promotion of the tourist sites.
Similarly, DOT and Tieza suggested the tour packages and site improvements contained in the comprehensive report could be used by the city tourism office and its private partners to push the tourism industry in this part of the country.
The City Government, supported by the congressman, the Iloilo City Cultural Heritage Conservation Council, the Iloilo City Heritage Conservation Foundation, and Tieza, has started rehabilitation of heritage buildings along the central business district.
Once enacted by both Houses of Congress, the Treñas bill is expected to enhance the local tourism industry with the seven tourism sites as premier attractions.
