THE 1st Drilon Dragon Boat Festival along the Iloilo River is set to highlight the inauguration of the Iloilo River Esplanade project at the Treñas Boulevard on Saturday.
Senator Franklin Drilon, along with Saranggani Representative Manny Pacquiao, will lead the inaugural rites of the P70-million river project funded by the senator’s priority development assistance fund.
The dragon boat festival will feature eight groups, two from Iloilo City and six other groups from Boracay and Metro Manila, to vie in a competition rarely seen by the Ilonggos.
The completion of the 1.2-kilometer esplanade will support the tourism in the city, as well as create environmental awareness among the city’s residents. The river was revived for water sports and swimming for tourists.
Other activities include the canoe and kayak contests, inter-school band competition, and a fireworks display. Performances also await the spectators on the inauguration day that coincides the celebration of Iloilo City’s 75th Jubilee anniversary. (Lydia C. Pendon)
