THE Iloilo City Government will pursue the proposed columbarium and crematorium projects in 2013 as two city cemeteries are not capable anymore of accommodating thousands of buried dead.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the projects raised last year will be included in the 2013 annual city budget.
The columbarium project of collecting bones and placing them into a specific place will be done at the La Paz cemetery.
On the other hand, the crematorium project will be put up by the private sector inside the city cemetery at Tanza Street.
Gegato Abecia Funeral Homes, bid winner of the city’s project of free coffin, embalming and funeral services to the city indigents, had expressed interest of putting up a crematorium at the Tanza cemetery at a minimal fee.
The City Government is maintaining two city cemeteries, and other cemeteries in the districts are maintained by the Catholic Church.
These are the catholic cemetery also in Tanza beside the city cemetery, and in the districts of Jaro, Mandurriao, Arevalo and Molo.
Other private cemeteries are the American cemetery and Veterans cemetery in Jaro district and several private memorial parks. (LCP)
