Mayor gives police ultimatum to solve pawnshop heist-A A +A
Monday, January 14, 2013
MAYOR Jed Patrick Mabilog is giving the Iloilo City Police Office (Icpo) until the end of the week to fully solve and arrest suspects who robbed the Sarabia Pawnshop and Jewelry Store at Guanco and JM Basa streets.
Icpo officer-in-charge Senior Superintendent Ruperto Floro said he had mobilized his operatives to conduct a thorough investigation and follow-up leads to solve the January 12-robbery in the said pawnshop, which was owned and operated by City Vice Mayor Jose Espinosa III and wife Gina Sarabia Espinosa.
However, Floro is asking the mayor for enough time to solve the robbery case. Floro was installed as a new Icpo officer-in-charge last January 14, 2013, the same day of the implementation of the election gun ban.
Mabilog, meanwhile, said the local business community should not be alarmed over the incident as the Icpo is doing everything to solve the case. He cited an example when a suspect, Ernesto Estrella Jr., was identified by witnesses as one of the men who ransacked and robbed the jewelry and pawnshop establishment.
Mabilog admitted he has received information that armed groups are targeting a bank to rob which prompted him to call for a meeting last week with the business community, Icpo, and his office to discuss the strengthening of security measures in high risk business establishments.
Banks, gas stations, money lenders, pawnshops and jewelry stores and other financial institutions and offices were among the warned and alerted businesses in the city, Floro said.
