A LOCAL campaign for road sharing, pedestrianization and building walkable communities will be launched here on Tuesday, February 26 that will help transform Iloilo City into a walkable community.
City councilor Jason Gonzales, head of the I Love Iloilo Volunteer Team, will spearhead the launching with a forum on livability that will champion the use of road sharing and pedestrianization.
The forum to be held at the UPV Auditorium here will be keynoted by 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, environmentalist Atty. Antonio Oposa. Other speakers are Karmi Palafox, senior urban planner and partner at Palafox and Associates, and Marc Canton, lead convenor of the Movement for a Livable Cebu.
Gonzales said that Iloilo City has the necessary elements to be transformed into a walkable area in Western Visayas. Most livable cities in the world carry a common quality as walkable communities.
New York, USA’ Vancouver, Canada and even Bangkok, Thailand all feature wide sidewalks, cycling lanes and pedestrian malls for walk and livability.
