THE urban greening project of the Iloilo City Government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has started along the Iloilo River.
Royal palms were planted from Gaisano Iloilo to the Carpenters Bridge in Mandurriao district.
The project, which was implemented by contractor DM Magsino Plant Nursery, was allotted with a budget of P1.6 million. The project will run until March 26, 2013.
The urban greening includes digging, planting and guying of royal palm trees.
Already completed are Segment I (with 58 trees planted in 580 meters from Gaisano Iloilo to Jalandoni Bridge), and Segment 2 (with 70 trees in 700 meters from Jalandoni Bridge to West Diversion Bridge).
Ongoing is Segment 3 with 50 trees in 1,270 meters along the West Diversion Bridge to Carpenters Bridge in modified spacing brought about by the presence of pipes along the planting site.
Segment 4 is at the Promenade area behind the Provincial Capitol with 70 trees and the alternate site is at the Promenade site going to Muelle Loney with a length of 550 meters.
City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the palm trees will enhance the beauty of the riverbanks and give shade to the passersby.
