ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said there is now a need for an additional 10,000 houses in relocation sites for the increasing number of informal settlers in this city.

Mabilog received the latest report from the Iloilo City Urban Poor Office (Icupao) indicating the need for more relocation sites.

The city has already accomplished eight existing relocation sites for more than 1,000 informal settlers in addition to the latest sites in Lanit Jaro and Sooc Arevalo in the City Government-owned properties accommodating more than 3,000 families.

The ongoing construction of houses was funded with P344 million from the national and local governments and will prioritize relocation of 3,000 families from the riverbanks of the Iloilo and Batiano rivers and other danger zones.

Both housing projects will also accommodate more than 100 families who are fire victims in Tabucan Mandurriao.

Mabilog said the additional listing of informal settlers is another worry for the City Government as it committed to provide decent relocation sites and homes to the squatters and those ejected through a court order from their area of residence.

Mabilog said his administration is working hard to look for sponsors and funders for the construction of houses for the informal settlers.

The local and national government are working together to look for the funds in a move to make Iloilo a squatter-free city before the term of the President Benigno Aquino III expires in 2016.
