Modernization must start in the navy - Senator-A A +A
Tuesday, July 2, 2013
SENATOR Teofisto Guingona lamented the lack of support and preference to the navy as the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) puts more of its resources to the army.
The Philippines is composed of several islands surrounded by water but sadly, the AFP gives more preference to ground troops and the army but not on the naval forces, Guingona said.
The senator, stressed the disparity of preference in the country over 80 percent surrounded by the sea and only 20 percent land. But the bigger slice of the budget goes to land troops and the army while the naval forces get a minimal budget.
With the coming modernization plans of the AFP, Guingona said the government must give more focus on the needs of sea-based forces such as the Philippine Navy and Marines including the Coast Guard by giving these units modern warfare and equipment.
Guingona said the disparity on modernization preference has caused suffering and deterioration of the naval forces in carrying out their mandated task for national security. Other countries in Asia have started bullying the Philippines through encroachments and incursion of Philippine waters and jurisdiction.
There is an immediate need for AFP modernization that must start in sea-base forces, the senator pointed out.
