Tuesday, August 20, 2013
THE CITY Council of Iloilo approved on Tuesday the proposed ordinance on the proper disposal of lamp wastes containing mercury and other toxic elements.
City councilor Jason Gonzales, who submitted the plan, said he will incorporate the suggestions of other city councilors including the correct discarding of containers and specific collection points of toxic wastes.
Lamp wastes containing mercury include compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), mercury lights and fluorescent bulbs.
Committee on Health chairman Lyndon Acap said the ravages thrown by families along the streets and other areas post great danger to health.
He said children who play with the broken lamps are most susceptible to mercury toxic contamination.
