Brillantes: Try appointing SK officials-A A +A
Monday, September 16, 2013
EVEN as Senate President Frank Drilon believes the debate on postponing the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) only remains on the "holdover" issue, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes suggested a simple appointment of next youth officials.
According to Brillantes, the legislative debates on whether the current SK officials will just be retained or not may not be necessary anymore if they decide to just appoint SK officials.
"Naisip ko lang na kung wala naman palang sweldo, ie-elect mo pa. Piliin mo na lang. Magfi-fill-up ka pa ng balota ng pitong pangalan. Hindi ba mas mabuti na pumili ka na lang?" said Brillantes.
He noted how he learned that only the SK chairman receives honorarium while the SK kagawads do not receive any salaries.
"Basically, they are just volunteers (as SK kagawads). Magtatrabaho ba naman ang mga volunteers?" noted Brillantes.
On Sunday, Drilon said that while Congress may agree on postponing the SK polls set on October 28, lawmakers are divided on how the vacancies in the SK bodies will be filled up.
To note, the House version rejects giving any holdover capacity of incumbent youth officials while the Senate version wants them retained until the next conduct of SK polls.
"We should have a definition on how to fill-up these vacancies. To me, that is where the debate should be," said Drilon.
Comelec has been pushing for the postponement of the SK polls believing it has failed to meet its purpose of breed new leaders of government.
Senate is expected to pass on the final reading the bill postponing the October 28 SK polls. It comes just days after the House of Representatives passed its own version of the measure. (HDT/Sunnex)
