THE inclusion of the Iloilo River in the international Thies Riverprize award held recently in Brisbane, Australia brings in exposure to Iloilo and the rest of the Philippines.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, who recently came back from the awarding in Australia, said that four rivers, one of which is Iloilo, were selected for the award. Kenya won the award, while the other rivers include Australia and Russia.

Mabilog said the Iloilo River was selected as the lone entry of the Philippines in the international competition. The rehabilitation and preservation efforts of the City Government and interagency cooperation accomplished so much since February 11 and were presented to the international audience.

The city mayor said the Iloilo delegation was able to connect with the universities in Australia and a European University to come to Iloilo to see the river and the internationally famous Dinagyang Festival by January 2014.

The Kenya River shows a people component with water for use of the community, industries, and for livestock.
