A GRADE 6 pupil of a public school in Iloilo City will represent Western Visayas in the World Food Day 2013 “National On-the-Spot Mosaic (poster) Making Contest” to be held in Metro Manila on October 11.
Department of Agriculture regional information officer Juvy Gaton identified the regional winner as Andrea Collin Socuelan, a 12-year-old pupil of Ticud Elementary School with her entry depicting the central theme of the celebration “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition.”
Socuelan bested other 15 participants in the regional competition and her mosaic entry will vie in the national tilt. The national champion will receive P15,000 cash and plaque of recognition for her school.
All regional contenders will receive P3,000 aside from participating in a Lakbay Aral tour in Luzon together with their respective coach.
Gaton said the contest started in 2003 to give pupils the chance to show their ideas on the global cause of hunger eradication. Entries from the region always landed in the top five slots and for the past three years, the Western Visayas regional entry was declared grand national winner.
The activity aims to enhance creativeness and resourcefulness of elementary pupils in visualizing the World Food Day theme through the use of indigenous agricultural materials available in the locality.
