Monday, October 7, 2013
THE amount of payment for medical benefits in Western Visayas is more than the collection made by the Philippine Health Insurance (PhilHealth) regional office, but the program remains stable and beneficial to 2.1 million members in the region, an official said.
PhilHealth regional vice president Dr. Dennis Mas said that other regions posted excess collection money, especially in the National Capital Region, and under a social solidarity policy of PhilHealth through the Bayanihan, those who have more will have to share with the less.
In a round-table discussion between the media and government information officers held October 7, in celebration of the 24th National Statistics Month, Mas said that in 2011, the collection in the region only reached P1.3 billion but PhilHealth was able to pay benefits amounting P3.1 billion.
In 2012, the collection was P1.5 billion and the benefit payments reached P3.5 billion, while as of August 2013, the collection was P1.3 billion and the benefit payments was P2.2 billion in trying to reach all Filipinos to be covered in achieving universal health care for all.
The government has a budget of P12 billion in 2012 and P35.3 billion in 2013 to cover some 14.7 million indigent families in the country.
The health insurance program is now covering all types of diseases, including cancer, and accredited as service providers are 536 health institutions in Western Visayas with 88 hospitals, 183 animal bite clinics and other health providers, 112 clinics, and more than 50 health centers for TB DOTS.
Also accredited are 1,775 PhilHealth professionals such as doctors, nurses, midwives, physical therapists, and other allied health service providers. (Lydia C. Pendon)
