A MOTORBOAT loaded with 20 drums of suspected stolen crude oil was confiscated off Sicogon Island, Carles town in Iloilo, the Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force said Tuesday.
The task force said that boat captain Romel Aurelio of M/B “KIA JEAN” and his eight crews were arrested when they failed to present their cargos’ documents.
The crew also resisted the task force’s inspection off Colebra Island in Concepcion town where they were first spotted.
Further investigation showed that they were residents of Jintotolo Island, Balud, Masbate and the vessel was owned by a certain Elemerano Aurelio.
Charges for violating Batasang Pambansa 33, a law that prohibits act inimical to the public interest and national security involving petroleum products, and resisting arrest have been filed against them.
The group is detained at the Concepcion Police Station while their motorboat was forwarded under the custody of the task force.
However, they were released after they have paid a fine of P20,000 to the local government.
Earlier this month, the task force also apprehended eight fishermen engaging in hulbot-hulbot or Danish seine in Barangay Antonia, Carles town.
Hulbot-hulbot or Danish seine fishing involves throwing a large rock tied to a net into the sea and dragging it underwater. It is strictly prohibited within and outside municipal waters because it destroys the coral reefs. (PR)
