Iloilo City among New 7 Wonder Cities-A A +A
Wednesday, October 16, 2013
TO BE included in the list of 77 new wonder cities of the world is already a great feat and there is a cause for Ilonggos worldwide to rejoice, Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said.
This highly urbanized city in Western Visayas, Cebu in Central Visayas, and Vigan in Ilocos Sur are the contenders of the Philippines which bested more than 200 cities worldwide to be part of the list as a result of global online voting which started last March 2012.
The result of the eliminations was announced by Swiss firm New7Wonders president Bernard Weber last October 7.
The list of 77 cities will further be trimmed to 28 and will be subjected to online voting by October 21. The top seven cities will be announced by the end of 2014.
Mabilog said he is elated to know that Ilonggos are fully supportive in the bid of Iloilo City to be recognized for its best practices and good governance.
Weber, through the website, said that “global in its scope, this remarkable New7Wonders long list reflects the energy and culture of the city at its best. Cities remind us of the possibilities of civilization when, for the first time in history, more than half of the world’s population live in cities.” Weber earlier said he hopes the campaign will be a “catalyst for discussing everything from urban planning to metropolitan governance, from tourism to architecture.”
The New7Wonders Cities is the third global voting campaign by the Swiss firm, after the man-made New7Wonders of the World and the New7Wonders of Nature. In 2011, Palawan’s Subterranean River National Park was named as one of the world’s New7Wonders of Nature amid an aggressive campaign by local officials.
