DOST to put up food innovation center in every region-A A +A
Friday, October 18, 2013
THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is set to establish a food innovation center in every region in the country, said DOST Assistant Secretary Robert Dizon during the three-day Visayas Science and Technology Fair 2013 in Iloilo City.
The fair, conducted on October 16-18, showcased different science and technology initiatives in the three Visayan regions. It features fora for smarter people, empowered communities, information and communication technology innovators, globally competitive industries, and SMEs with science and technology innovations.
Dizon said the food innovation center project with a research component will hopefully come up with innovative and add-on products based on the major products in the region.
In Western Visayas, major agricultural products include sugar, mangoes, and rice, and the region could develop more by-products and add-on materials for export markets.
The center will be opened specifically to all MSMEs and researchers and in a way, a major preparation for the looming Asean integration by 2015, said Dizon.
He said the Iloilo leg of the science fair is the third regional cluster celebration held in Tagaytay City last September for areas in Southern Luzon, Baguio City for areas in Northern Luzon, Iloilo City for three regions in the Visayas, and Davao City for the Mindanao areas by November. (LCP)
