THE Iloilo City Government led by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has welcomed all newly-elected barangay officials, whether belonging to the opposition or with the administration, to dispel rumors of selective recognition.
Mabilog said the barangay election is a non-partisan exercise of suffrage and everybody is welcome to his office.
A total of 3,934 candidates vying for the position of punong barangay and barangay kagawads in 180 barangays in Iloilo City have filed their certificates of candidacy for the barangay elections.
Majority of incumbent punong barangays won in the recent barangay polls.
Association of Barangay Council (ABC) incumbent president Carlos Guarin said only 15 challengers emerged as punong barangay winners and places 165 incumbents as majority in the league. The challengers also ran under the administration support and that makes it a total of 176 punong barangay winners for the administration.
Barangay captain candidates in the city totaled 353, while 3,481 are vying as barangay kagawad with seven winners in each barangay. Candidates for punong barangay in 64 villages ran unopposed.
Mabilog said the barangay officials are recognized partners in development leaders must act with cooperation and unity.
A thanksgiving mass in honor of the barangay winners will be held October 31 as an activity of the city mayor’s office and Congressman Jerry P. Treñas.
