Fight on for city’s Liga top post-A A +A

THE battle for the top position of the Liga nga mga Barangay-Iloilo City Chapter is on and main protagonists are known supporters of city Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Representative Jerry P. Treñas.
This early, however, incumbent Liga president Carlos Guarin of Barangay Aguinaldo, La Paz district is enjoying the support of majority of barangay captains and also enjoying the statement of support from the city mayor.
Mabilog said earlier that he is supporting the equity of incumbent in the Liga race. The Liga president is an ex-officio member of the City Council and enjoys same privileges afforded to regular city councilors.
Challenger barangay chief Marietta Orleans, of Barangay Cuartero, Jaro district, who not take it sitting down. Orleans was former Liga president and became an ordinary Liga member after her term expired in 2007.
Orleans claimed support of incumbent village heads who supported her during her term as Liga president.
Both claimed support from the city mayor and congressman but Guarin may have the edge over Orleans for successfully steering the re-election of 165 incumbent punong barangay in the last October 28 barangay elections.
The city has a total of 180 barangays and there are 176 reelected and new barangay captains supportive of the administration of Mabilog and Treñas.
The newly elected and re-elected village chiefs will sit down as duly elected by December 1, 2013 for a term of three years. Preparations are underway for their mass induction and subsequent election of Liga officers to serve until 2016.
