School in Concepcion gets help from Thai monk-A A +A
Monday, December 16, 2013
DOMINGO Y. Sobremonte Memorial School in Barangay Agnaga, Concepcion, Iloilo is just a small school with only ten classrooms serving more than 200 students in Agnaga and neighboring villages.
Prior to the establishment of the school in the year 2000, the schoolchildren in the area had to go to Puente Bunglas in Ajuy or in Sara just to be educated.
But, Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), which made a fourth landfall in Concepcion, changed all that. It damaged the galvanized iron roofs of almost all of the school’s classrooms. The disaster brought more harm to the already limited resources of the school.
Provincial Administrator Raul Banias and his wife Dr. Nandie Joy came to the rescue. They brought huge tarpaulins donated by businessmen from Iloilo City to temporarily replace the damaged roofings of classrooms.
More help came afterwards. Dhammakaya Foundation and The Middle Way Meditation Institute, the group which brought the record-breaking Light of Peace Event in Miag-ao, Iloilo last May 2013, donated P100,000 worth of materials for the rebuilding of the destroyed classrooms.
Thai monk Venerable Ekachai Katapunyo of the Middle Way Meditation Institute led the group in formally endorsing the materials to school officials, Mayor Milliard Villanueva and the barangay officials last Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013.
School principal Aileen Sobremonte called on the parents, especially the fathers of the school children, to help re-build the classrooms and restore their roofings.
The teachers and students of Domingo Y. Sobremonte Memorial School expressed great appreciation to the help extended by the Dhammakaya Foundation and The Middle Way Meditation Institute to their school.
“Thank you very much for your help,” chorused the students and teachers as they pose for a picture with the guests after the turn-over ceremony. (PR)
