Mayor eyes pedestrianization at Calle Real-A A +A
Friday, January 3, 2014
ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will discuss with Councilor Jason Gonzales the suggestions of the business sector along JM Basa St. (Calle Real) to conduct the pedestrianization of the old main street for one day or the whole of Sunday.
Mabilog said the City Council resolution will have to be amended so that the project for allowing pedestrians to walk on the road stretch will be every Sunday only and no more on Saturday afternoon until the next day.
Business establishments such as banks, restaurants, shopping malls and stores along the Calle Real claimed the closure of the street affects their business and there are still offices open on Saturdays.
The Gonzalez project seeks to enhance the beauty of walking and enjoying the many heritage buildings of the city proper along Calle Real.
Gonzales earlier said that considered as heritage buildings are those over 50 years old and mostly of art deco and renaissance architecture at the turn of the century. (Lydia C. Pendon)
