FIVE barangays in the district of Jaro not served by the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) are currently enjoying water provided by a solar-powered rainwater harvesting system.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the project was a city proposal for a joint UN World Food Programme and the UN Habitat Initiative for Philippine Cities and Climate Change Adaptation in the barangays whose village chiefs went to Japan in 2012 to train in disaster risk management and climate change adaptation.

The training in Japan was made possible by the City Government through the community-based adaptation and resiliency against disasters (CBARAD) project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) and CityNET.

Beneficiaries of the rain water harvesting project are the combined 32,327 population of water-scarce barangays of Buntatala, Balabago, Calubhihan, San Isidro and Dungon A which are also identified as vulnerable to flooding especially during the onslaughts of supertyphoon Frank in 2008.

Mabilog said the rain water harvesting project is trying to help solve the water scarcity and initially identified barangay halls as harvester with concrete pipes as storage. Each identified barangay were installed with two units of rain harvester system costing some P100,000 by contractor Ateneo Innovation Center.

The inauguration and ceremonial turnover of projects to the recipient barangays was held on November 26, 2013 and today, the five barangays enjoy water for cleaning the toilet of persons with disability, water for communal gardens and other domestic uses.

The beneficiaries are 13,489 residents in Barangay San Isidro; 11,688 in Barangay Balabago; 3,989 in Barangay Buntatala; 1,597 in Barangay Calubihan; and 1,564 in Barangay Dungon A.

Mabilog said the recipient barangays rely mainly on groundwater supply which is vulnerable to contamination and possible saltwater intrusion due to the rapid urbanization and real estate development around the areas.
