Aklan entries bag Paraw Regatta tilt

FOR the first time, two entries from Malay, Aklan bested Iloilo homegrown sailors to bag the championship trophy and cash prizes under Category B sailboats in the 42nd Iloilo Paraw Regatta held last Sunday, February 23, 2014 along the Iloilo Strait.

Aklan sailboats, especially from Boracay Island are perennial participants in the Iloilo sea race classic which is considered as the biggest regatta competition in whole Asia in terms of number of partiicpants. The race route covers 23.8 kilometers from the starting line in Villa Beach in Iloilo City and back.

Iloilo Paraw Regatta foundation chairman Manuel Villa said this year’s edition has a total of 62 entries divided into three categories with 29 entries in Category A for sailboats with a waterline length of 16 feet and below; 19 entries in Category B for sailboats with length 16.1 feet to 22 feet; and 14 entries in Category C for sailboats with length of more than 22 feet.

Category B winners were Joftman V3 2 as first place and Naknak as second place, all owned by Nicanor Gad of Sambiray, Malay, Aklan winning trophies and cash prize of P75,000 and P50,000 respectively.

Third placer was Cherily of Federico Tantiado of Parara Sur, Tigbauan winning P20,000; 4th is Princess Mae winning P15,000 of Pablito David Jr of Camangay, Leganes, Iloilo; and Nina, Isiah and Maxx winning P12,000 of Hector Espinosa of Arevalo, Iloilo City.

However, the bigger sailboats under Category C were dominated by Iloilo entries with Cheryl as first place winning P100,000 of Federico Tantiado of Parara Sur, Tigbauan, Iloilo; Marjhonec & Maxx as second place winning P75,000 of Hector Espinosa of Sto Niño Sur, Arevalo, Iloilo City; and Kristine winning P50,000 of Oscar Espinosa of Sto Niño Sur, Arevalo, Iloilo City.

The Category A winners were LD of Wennie Demetillo of Camangay, Leganes, Iloilo winning P50,000, second place was Mitch Angel winning P30,000 of Michael Anthony Tangub of Poblacion Tigbauan; third was Piranha 3 winning P18,000 of Benito Gordoncillo of Camangay, Leganes, Iloilo , fourth was Arlyn 1 winning P15,000 of Orlando Demetillo of Camangay, Leganes, Iloilo; and fifth was Arlyn 2 of Orlando Demetillo of Camangay, Leganes winning P13,000.
