CONSTRUCTION of the Iloilo Convention Center, a multi-million peso government project in Iloilo City that aims to serve as an international venue for world-class conventions, is on time and ready to host the Asia Pacific Economic Council (Apec) Ministerial Meetings in October 2015.

Senate President and Iloilo native Franklin M. Drilon made the assurance adding that the full construction is set to start with a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday morning, February 28, 2014.

Set to lead the groundbreaking rites are Drilon, Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor and city lone district Congressman Jerry Treñas, together with Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson and officials of the Department of Tourism and Tourism Infrastructure Enhancement Zone Authority (DOT-Tieza).

In a recent radio interview, Drilon said the construction cost of around P700 million of the convention center is already downloaded by Tieza and DPWH.

Another P200 million will be downloaded by the winning bidder in the provision of amenities such as CCTV cameras, kitchen, furniture, air-conditioning units and others. The project is a public-private partnership and a private corporation will operate and maintain the convention center upon winning the bid set by Tieza.

The building was designed by noted Ilonggo architect William Coscoluella defining the innate Ilonggo features such as the paraw sailboats and Dinagyang Festival. It will be constructed by Hilmarcs Construction Corp. for a period of one year and six months.

Power and water supplies are already in place and Megaworld Corp. is finishing up two five star hotels in the area as well other hotels in the city preparing to accommodate some 3,000 delegates from 21 countries in Asia and the Pacific.

After the groundbreaking activity, Drilon is slated to grace the opening and launching of ZUM Iloilo, makers of electric tricycles and Emotors at Barangay Calubihan in Jaro district.

The Senate President will also preside in the Iloilo-Batiano River Development Council (IBRDC) conference on Friday starting at 2PM and as a main godfather in a mass wedding ceremony of more than 50 couples to be held at 5 p.m. at the river Esplanade.
