MORE than 1,000 bicycle riders from different local government units in Iloilo province is set to join the 1st bike festival on March 30, 2014.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the bike festival will showcase the city tourist attractions and will promote biking as a major sports tourism activity.

“It is not a race but just for fun with stops at the designated tourism site. The city mayor had proposed that the festival be held every year,” said Rommel Castro, the city’s sports coordinator.

Castro said the bike festival will be divided in three legs that include the city tour and stops, the Metro Iloilo Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) covered towns and the mountain bikers of Guimaras Island.

The road expansion project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) along the diversion road features a bicycle lane and walk lane for bikers and pedestrians.

DPWH said that as soon as the activity is finished, the eight-lane diversion road will be the first road stretch in the country with a red tiled bike lane and walk lane aside from the access roads for establishments along the road.

The awarding of certificates and recognition for finishers and sponsors will be held at 4 p.m. at the Megaworld starting area.
