City moves to curb proliferation of ‘hot meat’-A A +A

THE City Government of Iloilo is all set to curb and eradicate the proliferation of “hot meat” or illegally slaughtered animals sold in public markets, restaurants, and hotels.
City administrator Norlito Bautista said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog issued Executive Order 26, which will create the Iloilo City Task Force on “Hot Meat” and designating the chairman and members thereof.
Pursuant to provisions of Republic Act 9296 or the Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines, the conduct of post-meat establishment control is vested in the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) and local government units to regulate the flow, preparation and sale of meat and meat products for human consumption. This is in accordance with national policies, procedures, guidelines and rules and regulations to ensure that meat and meat products have undergone meat inspection.
Bautista said the proliferation of illegally slaughtered animals may cause transmission of animal diseases to humans especially meat and meat by-products not duly inspected by the proper authority.
Regarding slaughtered animals for the making of lechon, Bautista said the task force will survey the number of commercial lechon makers in the city that need a business permit from the city government.
A veterinary inspector will also be fielded to inspect the pigs to be slaughtered and sold to the public.
Bautista said that lechon-making for personal consumption and backyard slaughtering of the animals can’t be inspected all the time by the veterinary inspector.
The task force will look into this matter and devise ways to ensure the safety of the public.
The Task Force “Hot Meat” is composed of city veterinarian Dr. Tomas Forteza Jr as chairman, Dr. Fedy de la Cruz as vice chairman. Members are city administrator Norlito Bautista, city legal officer Atty. Daniel Dinopol, city ENRO Engr. Noel Hechanova, city police director Supt. Ruperto Floro, city health officer Dr. Urminico Baronda, BPLO officer incharge Francis Cruz, Ely Sumaray of LEEO, executive assistants Ely Estante and Felix Muchada.
The task force will formulate and implement immediate and long term policies, plans and programs for the control of hot meat and its distribution to its outlets, and to initiate filing of cases against violators.
