TWELVE thousand volunteers in Iloilo City are ready for a massive clean-up drive and construction of 34 Gawad Kalinga housing units at the San Isidro relocation site in Jaro district on Saturday, April 12.

The clean-up drive and construction of GK houses is part of the Bayani Challenge spearheaded by Gawad Kalinga.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the 180 barangays in the city are encouraged to create their own Facebook account showing barangay folks participating in the clean-up drive.

All City Hall employees are encouraged to participate in the barangay clean-up.

An estimated one million volunteers from the 12 provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao are expected to join the nation building for two months, which starts in April 11 and ends in June 12.

The 12 provinces covered by the GK Bayani Challenge are those affected by the typhoons and other natural calamities. These are the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo and Negros Occidental in Western Visayas; Bohol and Cebu in Central Visayas; Eastern Samar, Leyte and Samar in Eastern Visayas; and the provinces of Palawan and Zamboanga.

The GK campaign will be conducted in 10 towns of northern Iloilo devastated by Typhoon Yolanda. The activities include building of GK houses, spending time with the kids, conducting health missions, clean-up drive, refurbishing of schools and tree planting.
