City alert up on Mers-Cov-A A +A
Monday, April 21, 2014
THE Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council reconvened Monday to discuss the report on the entry of 18 Ilonggo overseas Filipino workers (OFW) last April 15 through the Iloilo international airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo.
The OFWs were in the same flight with a male Filipino nurse from the Middle East before the Holy Week and suspected to be suffering from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers-Cov).
The council instructed all village chiefs to be on alert to track any suspected Mers-Cov victim in their areas.
The male nurse victim was working in Al Ain City near Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), where many Filipino doctors, nurses, and other paramedic practitioners are based.
City health officer Dr. Urminico Baronda said it is better to be on alert and prevent the spread of the disease than not doing anything at all.
Early symptoms show the patient having a fever and maybe misconstrued as ordinary influenza or colds.
Baronda said a married couple from the municipality of Guimbal, Iloilo is currently in an isolation room at the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao after they claimed last Friday, April 18, that they were on the same airplane with the suspected OFW.
The council is currently tracing the whereabouts of 18 people in Western Visayas, who were passengers of the same airplane with the suspected OFW.
The people are from different provinces in the region and the province of Iloilo has four, Iloilo City has one, Guimaras has one, Antique has four, Capiz four, Aklan has one, and Negros Occidental has three.
Baronda said 11 persons were already accounted and seven are still being looked after.
Mers-Cov has the same symptoms like an ordinary fever or the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARs) such as fever, cough, sneezing and sometimes, diarrhea.
The best deterrent against the spread of the virus is personal hygiene, frequent hand washing with the use of soap and covering the mouth and nose when sneezing to deter the spread of the virus.
