24 illegal fishers nabbed-A A +A

TWENTY-FOUR fishermen, who were caught using hulbot-hulbot (Danish seine), were arrested in Carles, Iloilo City this week.
The arrested fishermen were Rodolfo Basa, 56 (pilot), Nilo Depalubos, 37 (machinist), Rene Belana, 28, John Rey Distor, 22, Ramil Fuentes, 38, Chito Bacaling, 35, Victor Bargo, 35, Michael Gorteza, 28, Paul Ledesma, 33, Francisco Ampil, 51, Haide Bagoy, 57 – all were boarding F/B Cherrylyn.
The other arrested fishermen were identified as Arman dela Rosa, 47 (pilot), Ricky Cadiao, 34 (machinist), Ariel Bito-on, 38, Dionald Bayola, 32, Roland Cadiao, 31, Helnard Tuma-og, 27, Ian Señel, 23, Sammy Delfin, 19, Leo dela Cruz, 36, Ernie Bito-on, 22, Johnny Mondragon, 48, Canoy Gallardes, 50, Carlos Barrios, 56 - all were boarding F/B J-Boy.
Senior Police Officer 1 (SPO1) Gilbert Piedad, of the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force, said the fishermen were onboard two fishing boats, F/B Cherrylyn and J-Boy, and were caught fishing at 3.6 kilometers from Gigantes Island.
The use of Danish seine and modified Danish seine has been banned pursuant to Fisheries Administrative Order 246, series of 2013.
Seized from the fishermen’s possession was a fine mesh net prohibited under Section 89 of Republic Act 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998.
Investigation revealed the two fishing boats were owned by Victoria and Ruben de la Rosa of Barangay Pantalan, Carles and these have no permit to operate.
Piedad said the arrested fishermen were detained at Carles Municipal Police Station, while the tom weights and scaring lines and other fishing paraphernalia were in their custody.
Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. said the successive apprehension of illegal fishers in northern Iloilo for the past two months is the result of the province’s relentless campaign against illegal fishing. (PIO)
