THE Iloilo City Council approved Tuesday a resolution calling for an investigation on city markets in aid of legislation.

City councilor Joshua Alim said the investigation will start at the terminal market and to proceed at the central market, where irregularities were uncovered in the awarding of stalls, the selling and lease-out of stalls by other persons and not with the City Government and the tapping of electricity from the markets by unscrupulous persons.

Alim said the City Council will have to know the irregular practices so that they can enact measures to regulate, eradicate and stop the nefarious practice.

There are more than 1,000 stalls under evaluation in the city’s seven public markets. The markets are two I n the city proper, two in Jaro district, one in La Paz, one in Arevalo, and one in Mandurriao.

So far, only 85 stalls were evaluated at the terminal market and more than 50 were already declared vacant by the city public market committee upon discovery of irregularities.

The committee is headed by city administrator Norlito Bautista and other members are councilor Rodel Fullon Agado, former city councilor Ely Estante, city treasurer Katherine Tingzon, and city legal officer Dan Dinopol.

The public markets are placed under the supervision of the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) and irregularities surfaced recently upon interviews of the market committee on stall original awardees and current occupants.
