THE Iloilo City Council has delegated to the council’s committee on zoning to render a committee report on a special privilege sought by Iloilo Foremost Milling Corp. to have its own dockyard along the Iloilo River.

But City Councilor Plaridel Nava said there must be no special privilege for the dockyard of a private firm along the river at Barangay Progreso, Lapuz.

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), in collaboration with the Philippine Ports Authority, is already building a new wharf and terminal along the river near the milling corporation and set to be finished before the end of this year.

The new wharf at Lapuz district will soon cater to fastcrafts from Iloilo City going to Bacolod City and back, and for roll-on roll-off vessels going to Palawan and Caluya.

The Department of Public Works and Highways is also planning to build a bridge near the milling plant across the river going to Arroyo St. as an important access road of the new wharf along the river.

Nava said the new Arroyo Bridge will only cater to one family business and not for the general welfare of the people here.

Meanwhile, the Iloilo City Government and Double Dragon Corp. will soon start a new terminal building at the Parola, Fort San Pedro area for ferry vessels going to Guimaras Island and back. (LCP)
