IN A move to address the problem caused by traffic choke points in Iloilo City proper, the seven center islands fronting the Iloilo Provincial Capitol will be reduced in size to allow road expansion and easy traffic movement.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said he is going to meet Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor soon to discuss the plan of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to reduce the sizes of the center islands, popularly known as Siete Pecados.

The plan calls for the construction of a big rotunda circle in place of the islands to move the traffic in counterclockwise with traffic lights for pedestrians passing the center for the Capitol.

A larger center island with flowering plants maintained by the Iloilo Cultural Heritage Council will be reduced in size but the plants will remain.

Other center islands will be also be reduced considerably but the plants will remain just the same to beautify the place, Mabilog said.
