ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is planning to put up a monument at the Jaro Plaza with names of Ilonggo soldiers who died in defense of the motherland to preserve and protect democracy, as well as other Ilonggo heroes long forgotten by history.

“We are going to preserve their memories with their names written in the monument so that the Ilonggos will know and honor them for what they did to the country,” Mabilog said.

First name to be carved in the monument will be that of Marines First Lieutenant Roger Flores, a native of Barangay Bonifacio Tanza who died last week in an encounter with the Abu Sayaff bandits in Patikul, Sulu.

Mabilog said there are numerous Ilonggo heroes and soldiers who died in the name of the country but were not given due recognition.

He said with the monument, Ilonggos and visitors will know the local heroes, their history and accomplishments as pride of Iloilo and the whole Ilonggo people.
