ILOILO CITY – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is eyeing for an establishment of a light rail transit (LRT) project in Panay Island.

The LRT is seen to create a huge economic impact and boosts the tourism industry in the four provinces of the island -- Antique, Aklan, Capiz, and Iloilo.

Mabilog has already requested the National Economic and Development Authority and the Department of Transportation and Communication for a feasibility study for the project.

The LRT will start from Iloilo City to the Iloilo towns of Leganes, Zarraga, Pototan way up to the province of Capiz and to Kalibo; Aklan up to Caticlan, Malay in northern Panay as a gateway to Boracay Island.

Mabilog said the feasibility study will also consider lines to northern Iloilo to reach the scenic spots of the province, another line to southern Iloilo to pass by the historical towns of Guimbal, Miagao and San Joaquin and up to province of Antique.

The mayor said the DOTC, which will fund the study, may opt to take off from the proposed reestablishment of Panay Railways in the island and the railtracks as the passageway of LRT.
