THE Division of Iloilo City Schools of the Department of Education has chosen the Iloilo River Esplanade as a field trip destination of pupils in 54 public elementary schools here.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog announced that he approved the request of the Division of City Schools through Division Superintendent Nelly Valerio to allow the elementary pupils to go to the Esplanade scheduled every Saturday.

The pupils will see the beautiful 1.3-kilometer stretch of the river esplanade planted to flowers, trees and other ornamental plants, including the mangroves growing at the river banks, and may hold bird watching.

Mabilog said the educational and tourism field trip will encourage awareness on the schoolchildren the importance of environmental protection and preservation as well as tourism potentials of the place.

The river esplanade was opened to the public early last year after the Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) finished the construction.

DPWH is currently finishing the underpass along the riverbanks connecting the esplanade to the side of the road.

It is also finishing the diversion bridge reconstruction and widening to connect to the 14-kilometer Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue going to the Iloilo Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo.

The avenue, popularly known as the diversion road, has been expanded and widened into a 10-lane road to include a bicycle lane, walkers’ lane and access road on top of ornamental plants and flowers planted beside the bike lane. (Lydia C. Pendon)
