THE Provincial Government, through its Adopt a Fisherman Program, distributed 181 motor engines to marginal fishermen in two separate ceremonies held in Estancia and Carles Tuesday, February 28.

Leading the activities were Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, who represents Governor Arthur Defensor Sr, and Provincial Agriculturists Ildefonso Toledo in cooperation with the municipal officials of the two coastal towns.

Of the 181 motor engines, 101 were distributed in Carles and 80 went to Estancia.

Banias said the motor engines were intended to fishermen who previously received boat building materials from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) and were victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

“The fund for this was taken from the Adopt a Fisherman donation and the engines were procured through competitive bidding. The beneficiary were chosen from the beneficiaries who were given boat materials only by Bfar but without engines and who were victims of [Super Typhoon] Yolanda,” said Banias.

The Adopt a Fisherman Program was launched three years ago to generate funds and donations to construct brand new motorboats for 9,000 typhoon-stricken fishermen in Northern Iloilo.

The program has so far served almost all of the identified typhoon victims from Carles, Balasan, Batad, San Dionisio, Concepcion, Ajuy, Barotac Viejo, Banate and Anilao. (Jezza A. Nepomuceno)
