ILOILO Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. said on Monday, March 6, he will support the women empowerment in Iloilo during the opening program of the 2017 Women’s Month Celebration.
“We recognize the power and role of women in nation-building. We will continue to support you and champion women empowerment in the province of Iloilo,” Defensor said in his message at the Provincial Capitol.
Defensor recalled the exemplary contributions of women who changed the world or left deep footprints in the hearts of their people, among them were Golda Meir, the first prime minister of Israel, Mother Teresa who founded the Missionaries of Charity, Marie Curie who discovered artificial radioactivity and opened many advances for physics, chemistry and engineering, and Joan of Arc who liberated her country, France, from the English.
“Women own 50 percent of this world… I cannot imagine a world without them,” he said.
Defensor’s pronouncements highlight the focus on the full implementation of the Magna Carta of Women as directed by President Rodrigo Duterte during his first State of the Nation Address.
The month-long celebration, with its theme: “We Make Change Work for Women,” opened with trade fair that will run until Friday, March 10, and a forum on cervical cancer and herbal farming, utilization and marketing, attended by 178 participants from Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina, municipal social workers and development officers and local officials.
Present in the kick-off celebration were Vice Governor Christine Garin, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Chair on Social Services Liecel Seville and first lady Cosette Defensor. (PR)
