ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, who has been linked to the illegal drug trade, is hoping to work side by side with Ozamiz City police head Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido.
Espenido was designated Monday, August 28, as the new Iloilo police chief. He was the head of the Albuera, Leyte, police when town mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. was slain. He was also the chief of Ozamiz City police when Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog was killed in an anti-drug operation.
But Mabilog, who was named a drug protector by President Rodrigo Duterte, said: “I look forward to working side by side with Chief Inspector Espenido as the President’s pointman in the battle against hard drugs in Iloilo both the city and the province.”
He said he is hoping that Espenido will help eliminate the city's illegal drugs problem.
Iloilo was once tagged by Duterte as “most shabulized” and “bedrock of illegal drugs.”
"I am sure that we could learn from his experience in fighting against hard drugs especially in identifying who are the new 'players' and where they are hiding," said Mabilog, adding: "In the city of Iloilo, I will share with him our own strategies and compare notes on how to win this war at the barangay level."
Mabilog also assured that the City Government is open to ideas on how to further strengthen its fight against the problem on illegal drugs.
The Police Regional Office (PRO) in Western Visayas also welcomed Espenido's assignment to Iloilo.
But PRO-Western Visayas spokesperson Superintendent Gilbert Gorero said they have yet to receive the order on Espenido's assignment. (PNA)
