Mayor to institutionalize Chinese New Year

THIS City’s mayor will sign an Executive Order (EO) institutionalizing the Chinese New Year celebration.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is set to sign the EO on February 12 as his legacy gift to the Chinese-Filipino community here.

Institutionalizing the celebration will provide an effective opportunity for the Chinese-Filipino and native Ilonggos to unite and cooperate, the mayor said.

More than 30,000 Chinese-Filipino are currently based in Iloilo, leading in business, education, health, social services and others, Doctor Roland Uy, president of the Iloilo Chinese-Filipino Cultural Association and Iloilo Chamber of Commerce said.

The Chinese New Year celebration grew through the years and became a major tourist attraction. It is also considered the biggest Chinese New Year celebration in the Philippines, Uy said.

There will be exhibits, cultural show, grand parade, pyrotechnics and food festival in line with the celebration.
