STUDENT-ATHLETES from the city and province of Iloilo are now eager to improve their over-all ranking in this year’s Philippine Youth Games or Batang Pinoy.
Iloilo will send 51 student-athletes who will compete in Batang Pinoy’s qualifying leg in Maasin City, Southern Leyte from September 24 to 28, 2013.
Of the 51 students, 14 will compete in athletics, 10 in pencak silat, eight in table tennis, 11 in arnis, and eight in karatedo.
Winners of the competition will automatically advance to the national finals to be held in Zamboanga City from November 19 to 13, 2013.
In support to the student-athletes, Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. has allotted P166,400 in allowance for them and their respective coaches through the Office of the Economic Enterprise.
Last year, Batang Pinoy’s championship was held in the province’s capital and of 142 local government units (LGUs) that participated, the host city landed in the seventh place.
The province and city of Iloilo garnered 13 gold, 14 silver and 20 bronze medals in 11 sports events.
Athletes from Baguio City were last year’s champion followed by those from Cebu City, Quezon City, Manila City, Laguna, and Zamboanga City.
Batang Pinoy is a sports program held annually of the Philippine Sports Commission, Department of Education (DepEd), and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
The sports competition is also supported by the Leagues of Provinces, Cities, Municipalities and Barangays, Philippine Olympic Committee, National Sports Association and non-government organizations.
Batang Pinoy aims to provide additional sporting activities for Filipino children aged 12 years old and below, while instilling in them the importance of physical fitness, thus helping minimize juvenile delinquency. (PR)
