ILOILO’S current football hero, Emilio “Chieffy” Caligdong of the Philippine Azkals, led the Globe Football Para sa Bayan 2014 kick-off program for the whole Visayas held last Saturday, March 8, at the football field of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.

Caligdong, a native of Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, is the Azkals Philippine team captain that will see action in April in Pakistan and in May at the Maldives.

Participated by more than 2,500 kids and young adults with ages 6 to 16 years old from 30 football clubs, the two-day football festival and clinic is a free grassroot program in reaching communities for underprivileged youths to interact and work together as a football team.

The community football teams are supported by Globe Telecom with inclusion into the tournament to give access to high level competition and opportunities to network and get scouted by private schools and teams for possible scholarships.

Miguel Bermundo, Globe CSR senior specialist, said the program accepts boys with ages 6, 8. 10, 12, 14 and 16 years old while open for female players.

Coach Kent Gobuyan of the Sta. Barbara football club said that Globe’s advocacy in training and developing potential players in the grassroots will hopefully produce world class athletes like Caligdong as a long-term goal. (Lydia C. Pendon)
