ILOILO City will hold on March 30 the first bike festival, with more than 1,500 people expected to participate.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the bike fest will cover a total of 25 kilometers around the city, and will stop by 14 local tourist attractions.

The activity aims to show off the advocacy on road sharing, clean environment, health and physical fitness, and road safety, and promote local tourism, he said.

Bike festival director Ronald Sebastian said the bikers who signified attendance will come from the city and province of Iloilo, Guimaras and the other Metro Iloilo Economic Development Council (Migedc) member towns, as well as General Santos City and Metro Manila.

A one week bike exhibit was opened Monday, March 24, to showcase more than 50 bicycles, including mountain bikes, triathlon bikes, folding bikes, vintage bikes and other sports bicycles, the Ilonggos used.

Sebastian said the race on Sunday will start at the Megaworld business park at 4 p.m. The awarding and street part will be held in the same area after the race.

Also expected to join the race are Mabilog, Senate President Franklin Drilon, global environmentalist lawyer Antonio Oposa, and Councilor Jason Gonzales. (Lydia C. Pendon)
